Summer is here and the fishing is definitely turning to a summer pattern. It has been a great couple of weeks for speckled trout both in quality and numbers.
As for Sabine Lake, they are still releasing lots of fresh water from the Neches and Sabine rivers. This is leaving the lake fresh and muddy. However, the southern reaches of the Sabine ship channel, the jetties and Keith’s Lake are producing great catches of trout and redfish. We are looking for clean moving water and keying on mullet and brown shrimp. On tougher days with a little dirtier water, we are utilizing live shrimp under a popping cork.
On days with more favorable conditions, we are catching the majority on Mirrolure Lil Johns and Marsh Minnows in salt and pepper in clear water and purple chartreuse in dirtier water.
We are also operating out of Lake Calcasieu and are catching good numbers of bigger trout. With all the fresh water from locally heavy rainfall, it has concentrated these larger grade of trout in pockets holding layers of salt water under discolored fresh water. The fishing here is getting better all the time with better tides and an absence of heavy rain I really feel like any day a monster trout will be landed.
On Calcasieu, as far as plastics go, it’s the same as Sabine Lake except instead of 1/4 oz. jig heads on the plastics we are fishing 1/16 oz. very, very slowly over shell. If you don’t hang up every once in a while it’s not slow enough.
We are also employing wading tactics in Calcasieu to put together some impressive stringers. While doing this the early morning top water bite has been hot. Some of the go to top waters have been the Mirrolure She Dog and She Pup as well as the Heddon One Knocker. Colors are bone and chartreuse.
Also, we are adding new boats and new guides to facilitate our growing clientele. If there is a specific technique or trip request, please let me or your guide know as we aim to please. Another new facet coming soon is our kayak guide services that will include guides and Kayak transfer that will locate you and your equipment to the hot zones accessed by our bay boats.
I would like to thank all the clients, new and old, as well as our wonderful sponsors that make all this possible.
Good luck and tight lines.
Captain Adam Smith
