Coming into the new year we are definitely in a winter pattern. Most of the shrimp have left both the Sabine and Calcasieu systems. The fronts are getting stronger and lasting longer. Once the fronts subside we are still battling stiff winds from every direction as well as low water.

We were able to locate clean water in the Calcasieu system this past week and had great catches of upwards of 30 redfish a day. Unfortunately, the water wasn’t quite clean enough for a good trout bite.

Going forward into January, we will be focusing on keying in on mullet working the flats as this will be the primary food source for the next few months. We will be throwing DOA Bait Busters and the larger DOA CAL Paddle Tail, as well as the PT 7 top water to mimic the larger fin fish that will be making up our trout and red fishes diet. We like to rig these lures on Ande 20lb braid with 20 or 30 Ande Floro leader.

Also, when sight fishing quality polarized sunglasses make a big difference our shades of choice are Salt Life St. Thomas. I have worn every brand out there and Salt Life really did a great job on these, very well made and super light and comfortable. Big thanks to the clients who stuck it out with us through some rough conditions, I had a blast with you guys and hope to see you all back.
